Separate the energy flow from the payment

Export means electricity flowing from your home into the grid. Import means electricity bought from the grid. A kilowatt-hour, or kWh, is a unit of energy. Your import tariff, the pricing agreement for purchases, and your export tariff, the agreement governing payments for electricity you send out, are different parts of the financial picture.

Your inverter's app may show exported energy before an export account is active. That measurement describes a physical flow, not an entitlement to payment. Check which meter readings the supplier will use, when the agreement starts and how credits appear. Do not build a savings calculation around export income that has not been agreed and confirmed.

In Great Britain, the Smart Export Guarantee, usually shortened to SEG, is a route to payment for eligible small-scale renewable electricity exports. It is not a single universal export tariff. Ask the supplier to confirm eligibility, required installation evidence, metering arrangements and any relationship between its import and export products. Can you export from a battery?

A battery can supply electricity for export where the installation supports it and its controls and connection conditions permit it. Getting paid is a separate question. Ask explicitly whether your proposed export product pays for stored solar electricity, grid-charged electricity, or both, and whether it requires evidence that distinguishes them.

Do not assume permission to export solar establishes permission to buy electricity cheaply and resell it from storage. Tell the supplier how you intend to operate the battery. Compare selling now with keeping energy for later

Export income is only part of the calculation. If you sell stored electricity now and then buy expensive electricity to run the home, the sale may make the overall bill worse. The reverse can also be true. If solar electricity earns an attractive export payment and you can buy the electricity you need later more cheaply, storing all the solar may sacrifice value. Using more of your own generation can be a personal preference, but it is not automatically the financially best plan. Evaluate the import and export sides together.

Avoid counting the same energy twice

For solar surplus, compare exporting it immediately with storing it and later avoiding an import. The export payment you give up belongs in the storage calculation. You cannot claim both that payment and the full avoided purchase for the same energy. If you would otherwise use the solar directly in the house, diverting it into storage also changes what the house needs to buy now.

For a permitted grid-charge-and-export cycle, compare export revenue with the total charging cost and relevant operating costs. Include the energy lost during conversion. Check the practical bottleneck

Your battery's energy capacity limits how much it can store. Its power limit controls how quickly energy can move, and the installation's export limit may constrain what reaches the grid further. Household consumption shares the available output. A battery capable of discharging does not imply all of that output can be exported at a chosen moment.

Look at the meter records alongside the inverter history. Confirm that exports appear under the correct agreement and that credits reflect eligible energy. If the app and bill seem inconsistent, establish whether they cover the same periods and measurement points before concluding that payment is missing. Keep the agreement and evidence of activation available when asking the supplier to investigate.

Coordinate export with the rest of the day
