A home battery can pay for itself if the electricity costs it avoids, after losses and running costs, eventually exceed its installed cost. It is not automatic: a home with little expensive electricity to replace, limited solar surplus or a small difference between cheap and expensive rates may see a long payback, or no convincing financial case at all.

Start with the bill the battery can actually change

A battery moves electricity through time. It stores energy when buying or using it later would be more valuable. A tariff is the pricing agreement with your electricity supplier. On a time-of-use tariff, the price varies with the time you consume electricity. A kilowatt-hour, written kWh, is a unit of energy, the quantity your electricity bill charges for.

There are different ways storage can create value. You can keep surplus solar generation for later household use, buy cheaper grid electricity to avoid buying it at a higher price, or export stored energy when your agreement permits it and the payment makes sense. Export means sending electricity from your home to the grid. These opportunities overlap: you cannot count the same stored energy as both household savings and an export sale.

Calculate value before calculating years

For electricity bought from the grid, compare the cost of all the energy used to charge the battery with the cost of buying the energy it later delivers at the time you need it. Some energy is lost in charging and discharging. The difference between headline prices therefore overstates the margin available to pay for the equipment.

Solar charging is not necessarily free either. If you could have sold that electricity, the export payment you give up is a cost of storing it. If you could not export it, its alternative financial value may be lower. Compare actual alternatives at your home, rather than assigning every unit of solar electricity the full retail import price.

A useful simple calculation is: installed battery cost divided by annual net battery benefit equals simple payback in years. Annual net benefit means avoided import costs plus additional export income, minus charging costs, forgone export income and ongoing costs. Keep the comparison consistent so that a cost already included in your bill calculation is not deducted again. This formula needs your own inputs; it cannot produce a trustworthy universal answer.

Ask for a comparison you can inspect

Use your household's consumption pattern, not just its annual total. Electricity used while solar panels are generating is different from electricity needed after sunset. A battery only avoids an expensive purchase if it has usable energy left at that moment. Usable capacity is the energy you can actually draw from it, after any reserved charge, rather than simply the capacity printed on its label.

Ask an installer to show the assumed import and export tariffs, usable capacity, charging and discharging limits, energy losses and solar generation. Request the battery's incremental price if it is bundled with solar. Otherwise a strong return from the panels can hide a weak return from adding storage. Financing, maintenance, degradation and the value of money over time also matter beyond the simple payback calculation.

Price swings are an opportunity, not a forecast

On Octopus Agile in London, region C, on 31 August 2026, the price was −1.62p per unit at 13:00 and 42.84p at 17:00. The difference is 42.84 − (−1.62) = 44.46p per unit, roughly a 44p swing. These are dated observations from the Octopus public API, not assumed daily prices or a forecast of your savings.

Capturing a difference like that requires space to charge, enough time and charging power, and a later use for the stored energy. A full battery cannot absorb the cheap period. An empty battery during expensive demand cannot help. Other days may offer much less opportunity. A payback estimate should consider a representative range of conditions and should be tested against a less favourable tariff scenario.

Separate the equipment decision from the software decision

At that observed daily saving, £9.99 ÷ £1.24/day ≈ 8 days would recover a month's subscription charge. This arithmetic assumes that daily saving repeats; it does not establish a recurring monthly saving, prove the saving is additional to your present controls, or repay an installation. Evaluate software against your existing battery schedule, then evaluate the hardware against having no battery.

Make the decision with your own constraints

Backup resilience and greater use of your own solar may be worthwhile even when financial payback is uncertain. Keep those benefits separate from bill savings so you know what you are paying for. Check that any backup capability you want is actually included in the proposed installation.

Before signing, ask what happens to the estimate if your demand falls, export becomes more attractive, or the cheap-to-expensive price gap narrows. A proposal that explains when the investment stops making sense is more useful than a single optimistic payback date. Already own the equipment?
